The Björn Steiger Foundation

Emergency Services Charity

Diplomats Society is pleased to introduce you to the Björn Steiger Foundation on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their groundbreaking work for the emergency services in Germany. A German charity which assists in providing funding for emergency services and rescue organisations. The foundation is named after a 8-year-old child, Björn Steiger, who was killed in 1969 after being hit by a car whilst returning home from his local swimming pool. Shortly after this incident, his parents set up the foundation in his memory and with the aim of saving lives in emergency situations. The foundation encourages government, private individuals and companies to improve the provision of emergency care.

On 3 May 1969, Björn Steiger was hit by a car. It took almost an hour for the ambulance to arrive. A modern emergency service did not exist yet. Björn died during the transport on the way to the hospital. His parents, Ute and Siegfried Steiger, then founded the Björn Steiger Foundation to improve the emergency response and launch a modern emergency service. The death of Björn Steiger has triggered many changes in the German emergency service, including the implementation of the nationwide emergency numbers 110/112, the launch of ambulances, the 24-hour emergency medical service and the beginning of civil air rescue services. The death of Björn Steiger was the birth of the modern emergency services in Germany.

The History

May 1969 | The Accident

On the way home from the swimming pool, Björn Steiger is hit by a car. Passers-by immediately alert police and the Red Cross after the accident. Still, it takes almost an hour for the ambulance to arrive. Björn does not die of his injuries, he dies of shock.

October 1969 | The First Aid

Hilda Heinemann, the wife of the elected Federal President, condolences and pledges her support to the mourning parents Ute and Siegfried Steiger - a promise that she kept until her death. She has provided the Steigers important contacts to the Federal Ministers.

July 1969 | The Founding
Due to a lack of willingness to create a nationwide emergency service in politics, Ute and Siegfried Steiger founded the Björn Steiger Foundation as a non-profit association with seven friends of the family. The aim was to encourage the development of emergency aid in Germany and then to delegate this task to the responsible organizations and authorities. The couple Steiger initially planned 2 years for the foundation's work.

The Steiger Star

The Foundation Signet

1969 | The Steiger Star
A friend of the family, Manfred Kerler, together with the couple Steiger develops the "Steiger star". The star symbolizes protection and flexibility with its seven unequal rays as well as the will to change. Number seven is the favorite number of family Steiger.

1971 | Emergency Telephone
The German Federal Ministry of Transport has installed 100 emergency telephones in various federal states as a test, but they refuse to pay and the federal government ceases its activities in this direction. That's the reason why the Björn Steiger Foundation has equiped a total of 35.000 kilometers of federal and rural roads with emergency telephones. Most emergency telephones had to have their own telephone main line, which was billed monthly with 27,50 DM by the Federal Post Office.

1971 | 24/7 Emergency Doctor
With the support of Motor Presse Stuttgart, the Björn Steiger Foundation financed a fully equipped ambulance to deliver it to a German city. An emergency doctor must be available around the clock. After reporting in the media the city of Stuttgart has organized an emergency medical service. That was the start of the German 24-hour emergency medical system.
